Matinee:
The matinee started at 1pm, we therefore arrived on site at 11.30am. The dancers, however arrived at 1.30pm, which was a bit of a concern for us as they all needed dressing, hair, make-up and painting white... But we again, somehow managed to pull it out of the bag, which felt like a great achievement for us.
Leigh, who plays Horace Walpole, had an accident when dressed as the Mad Monk, from what I've gathered, the act where he falls onto the bed went significantly wrong, causing him to hit his nose. This caused bleeding and bruising, which we had to clear up during the quick change so that he could finish the performance. The show must go on?
Luckily there was a substantial gap between the two performances of the day, where Leigh had chance to recover, we were all very concerned about him and would've rather he went to A&E! We did however, admire his determination to carry on.
Evening performance:
For the evening performance, I had to improvise regarding Horace's make-up and find a way to cover up the plaster put on Leigh's nose, I refused to simply cover the cut with make-up as it would get infected and therefore it was essential that it was covered, even if the plaster was not typical to the period!
I actually watched the performance this evening, as a member of the audience. I really enjoyed it and absorbed the atmosphere. However, I found it difficult to hold back when I noticed a couple of minor costume faults, I desperately wanted to jump in and tweak them! The false button placket on Grace's breeches kept sticking out, and also there was a lack of muslin on one of the male dancer's shirts.
After the performance, the director picked up on being able to see Horace's feet when he was dressed as the Mad Monk, but this had been altered for safety purposes from the previous performance. We did however, decide not to lengthen the cloak again, but to dress Leigh in either black boots or socks to conceal his character shoes and tights.
